‘You can take the animal out of the wild, but you can’t take the wild out of the animal’. Evolution may have changed many things, but the basic workings or physiology of your cat and dog is almost identical to their wild ancestors. To some extent, dogs have evolved to digest and utilise vegetable matter in their diet.
Both dogs and cats have a short digestive tract which has been designed to digest raw meat and bones. When your pet is eating a raw food diet the gastric PH of their stomach is very low, meaning the acidity is high and able to break down raw meat and bones without any issues. The low PH is also effective at killing off any harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Pathogenic bacteria cannot survive in a highly acidic environment.
If your cat is blessed with the freedom of the outdoors, he or she will instinctively catch a bird and eat it whole from the beak to the tail feathers without any issues. The mere thought of feeding your pet raw meat, bones and offal may seem utterly disgusting to you, but your pet can stomach it (pun intended)!
Both cats and dogs have adapted to eating raw living foods from the beginning of existence, it is how their bodies were designed, natural foods just as Mother Nature intended!
