Are you wanting to Transition your pet (dog or cat) from a commercial pet food diet to fresh and raw food?
In my experience as a qualified pet nutritionist, a transition diet is not the same for all pets, especially growing puppy’s and kittens, pets with poor gut flora or compromised gut microbiome (sensitive gut issues) or health issues such as struvite’s.
Raw food and commercial diets (such as kibble and canned food) digest at different rates. When feeding both raw and cooked foods in the same meal, this can keep potentially harmful bacteria in the digestive tract for a longer period, which has the potential to cause digestive distress such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting in some pets.
This is because both dogs and cats have a short digestive tract which has been designed to digest raw meat and bones. When your pet is eating a raw food diet the gastric PH of their stomach is extremely low, meaning the acidity is high and able to break down raw meat and bones into soft digestible material. The low PH is also effective at killing off any harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Pathogenic bacteria cannot survive in a highly acidic environment.
